You keep on procrastinating when you are going to start your freelance writing career and make money writing online.
Your biggest worry has been how to make money online by writing.
I wish I could find a way of telling you that whatever most freelance coaches are saying is outdated.
The truth is that most people are teaching you the old hacks that worked somewhere between 2011 and 2016.
Just like Google changes its algorithm every time is the same way freelance writing is changing.
In short, most of the hacks reputable freelance coaches used back in the year 2011 will never work in 2019!
Online Writing History
Let’s be real: Back in 2011, when Upwork was still known as Odesk, many writers got decent pay, and it wasn’t a big deal to break through into freelance writing.
Surprisingly, the people who succeeded during those years are the trainers you know around, and they keep on teaching you that bidding sites and content mills are the best.
But here’s my simple question for you…
Why do you still find yourself stagnant yet you have completed a couple of freelance writing courses?
You procrastinate about when you are going to land a job on Upwork because your freelance coach keeps on telling you to craft winning proposals.
To make it worse, they give you hopes by providing you cover with letter templates to use when applying for jobs on bidding sites like Upwork and you still can’t land any jobs. So, you don’t make money writing online.
To cut the whole story short, you are listening to old-school freelance writing techniques, and that’s what you need to change – follow a reputable freelance coach who understands the current trends so that you make money writing online.
I have two things to tell you – bad and good news.
The bad news is that online writing isn’t as easy as you read it on blogs and like academic, you have to work smart to be at the top.
And the good news is that there’s a shortcut to make money writing online.
But how do you make money from online writing?
While it’s your prerequisite to either take the long path or short path, I’d advise you to take the short route. It will save you the hassle I’m seeing most online writers go through out there.
My Freelance Writing Journey
There is nothing as frustrating as losing friends just because you have nothing to offer them. The truth is that people don’t like associating with poor people. That’s precisely the same scenario I was in one year ago.
People don’t like associating with poor people
I needed to make friends. I needed the company of friends to keep me going. After all, what’s life without friends? In short, I needed to make money writing online.
At the same time, I was facing a financial crisis after losing more than $200 gambling in less than a week. I resorted to selling most of my items including my smartphone that was a month old.
I needed to supplement what my parents were offering me while on campus. There’s no way you can survive entirely on parents’ money as a student, and you will agree with me on this.
You need to buy your personal items, go out, have leisure, and sadly, your parents’ budget won’t cover that – so, you have to look for a side gig and make money writing online.
I had heard about online writing, but never believed it was legit because most people are cons. Have you been conned online? I have been conned several times with companies like Public Likes.
Nevertheless, I tried to make money writing online for the first time in my life. You know how hard it was bearing in mind that I come from a country where writing is nothing close to being a career.
Most magazines or media houses don’t have the idea that they should hire freelance writers to help them out.
They want to cut cost, and so, they force their employees to write for them. That’s why our magazines sound too techie, and a freelance writer like myself have no time reading boring content or articles.
With all these challenges, I still got the courage to try freelance writing, make money writing online and within just four months, I was making something decent. I now make money writing online part time because I’m still a student.
In short, I’m a student with no degree yet, and I’m pocketing an amount not even graduates from my country earn every month.

How to Make Money from Online Writing
1. Create Your Writer Website
After failing terribly on Upwork, I had to change my tactics if I was serious that I wanted to make money writing online. So, the first thing I did was to create a website – the one you are now reading.
Let me tell you a secret that most freelance coaches are not telling you – a writer website is the best place you can help you market yourself and make money writing online.
In most cases, freelance coaches will tell you to create a website because they want you to use their affiliate links to host your site – and they get some good passive income from it.
In short, their main aim is to make some good cash from you – that’s wrong.
Mine is different. I want you to create your website so that you can get known as fast as possible. My prayer is to see you champion this industry as soon as possible and make money writing online.
I lost friends because I couldn’t afford to host them. I hate poverty – real bad. That’s why I will continue preaching the need to be a job creator rather than being a job seeker.
With freelance writing, you are a job creator – not a job seeker.
Use your writer website to sharpen your online writing skills. It’s true that you can also publish your writing on sites such as LinkedIn and Medium, but I’d recommend you have a website and publish your blog posts there.
Just one month after my first freelance training, I created my site – no WordPress skills. I was totally new. I didn’t know how a website functions, but I had to create one.
And the good thing is that nobody limits you from posting anything – even if you are entirely new. For example, I wrote about freelance writing while I was still green in that area.
2. Go Ahead and Create Your Writing Samples
Sadly, nobody will know that you exist when you don’t tell them. So, you need to show people that you are an online writer and that means you will have to create writing samples on other blogs.
While you can use writing samples from your website, most clients won’t be pleased. Instead, they want to see your posts on other blogs. It makes them feel you are an authority.
Fortunately, I have a website where I publish freelance writers. So, be sure to check on it and see if you could be interested in getting published there.
That means that you need to guest post on different blogs if you want to build your portfolio the right way.
Maybe you feel like you haven’t settled on a niche and therefore you are scared to pitch to a publishing company. Please don’t. Instead, pick a few topics that you enjoy writing about and pitch those ideas to a publishing company and make money writing online.
You can choose to write about health topics or even personal finance. If you don’t know how to find publication companies in your niche, try searching on Google “Niche+write for us” – health+write for us.

3. Attract Clients By Having a Unique Lead Generation Strategy
If you want to succeed with your online writing business, you need to have a strategy that makes prospects come to you instead of you looking for them.
Most online writers go wrong because they want to spend their entire time pitching clients. While pitching is a good thing to do, it doesn’t make sense to pitch people that don’t know you.
As a student, trying to concentrate in my studies at the same time trying to succeed with my freelance writing business, I didn’t have much time to pitch all the time, but I tried as much as possible to send many pitches.
The unfortunate thing? Nobody knew me. So, my pitches would go to trash. Thus, the best thing is to develop a lead generation strategy that will help clients find you quickly.
To make money writing online, you need to spend most of your time marketing yourself online. This is what made me rise so fast.
I shared my success stories on social media platforms, and soon, people knew that I was a professional online writer – even my family members.
The advantage? Prospects started coming to me asking whether I could write for them, and in most cases, I would say yes to them because I was new and needed to get the experience.
Besides sharing my success stories, I developed and learned how to write in a conversational tone – a skill that most writers don’t have. That’s how I conquered freelance writing.
4. Pitch! Pitch! Pitch!
This is where the competition begins. If a reputable freelance coach like Elna Cain or a professional blogger like Jon Morrow mentored you, then you don’t have to worry about landing jobs using this tactic – pitching.
I didn’t know how to pitch until I met Elna Cain and joined her course – Write Your Way to Your First $1k.
With her course, I have become more professional, and I love how I get responses with my emails.
It means that I’m using the best approach to pitch clients.
Elna has templates to help you pitch clients, and THE BIG TRUTH IS THAT THEY WORK. I’m not trying to be promotional in any way because I don’t even get a commission.
My problem is that I don’t keep quiet when I notice something right and that’s why I love how Elna teaches her students. Her honesty is admirable.
Here is one of the templates that Elna helped me trim:

5. Increase Your Freelance Writing Rates
Well, you are an established freelance writer, and you make money writing online, but you need to earn more.
The truth is that the more you become an established online writer, the more expenses you have. To make everything leveled, you need to increase your freelance writing rates. In short, your freelance writing rates shouldn’t get stagnant. You need to raise it a couple of times.
I started by writing about any topic that came my way at the rate of 0.05 cents Kenyan shillings.) I wasn’t making much, and if I had to, then I had to burn the middle oil.
That’s not the kind of lifestyle. I wanted to work part-time and make money writing online even though I was still a student.
The only way was to up my game and increase my freelance writing rates. Remember I said I HAD TO UP MY GAME. It’s not just about raising your rates.
Clients will only pay you decently if you are better than most online writers. That means you have to exceed your client’s expectation.
From the time I started my freelance writing career, I’ve increased my rates four times so that I can be able to make money writing online.
6. Diversify Your Income
At this stage, I’m sure you make money writing online. It doesn’t matter whether you are writing for small or large businesses. What matters is that you are already stable and you make money writing online.
After a few months, I felt like I needed to start contracting freelancers to help me set up my business the right way. That means I had to incur some expenses.
With this in mind, I had to diversify my income. Writing alone wouldn’t cover all of my expenses. So, I partnered with a fellow and built a web hosting company where we host websites.
It’s a growing company, and we haven’t made as much, but we are hopeful that we’ll generate more money in the coming months.
Need a website with Divi theme for free? Contact us, and we’ll provide you with one. I also offer a freelance writing course where I teach what has worked for me so far. You are welcome to join.
Those are my main passive income channels. It doesn’t mean that they are the only ones you can try. There are lots and lots of ways you can diversify your income as a freelance writer.
You can be an affiliate, and you can teach what you know (not necessarily freelance writing). You can even teach people how to secure their relationships or teach people how to cook.
It’s clear that everyone wants to jump into the bandwagon – to make money writing online. You are struggling to find your feet or you have thought about launching your freelance writing career. Don’t procrastinate further because I can help you. Join my FREE 5-Day Email course and GET STARTED!
